Description

In-person Workshop, Falkirk, Scotland

Tutor: Rhona Duffy

Date: 10am – 4.30pm, Saturday, 16 May 2026

Price: £110 (includes tuition, use of tools, materials, and tea/coffee/snacks)

Suitable for adults and aged 16+

In this full-day workshop, you’ll create a beautiful mosaic garden stake, suitable for outdoors all year round, personalised with the colours and materials you choose.

You’ll work with glass, tiles, bone china, and other mosaic materials to create a unique stake based like those pictured. The finished size of the mosaicked part will be about 30-40cm high x 10cm wide. Rhona will guide you step-by-step, helping you build on your skills as you plan and assemble your design.

During the workshop, you’ll learn about:

• Materials suitable for long-lasting exterior mosaics
• The most effective tools and how to use them confidently
• Techniques for cutting glass, tiles, bone china, and more
• How to use tile adhesive to set your cut-up materials

It would be beneficial if you have a little bit of prior experience with mosaics or glass cutting, whether from one of Rhona’s workshops, another course or experimenting at home. But beginners are welcome if you’re happy it’s a busy – but fun! – day.

What to bring:

• Clothes you don’t mind getting messy, or an apron
• A packed lunch (or you can visit local cafés or shops)
• If you wear glasses for close-up work, please bring them
• Closed-toed shoes only for your safety

What we’ll provide:

• All materials, including a bespoke handmade metal garden stake
• Expert, supportive tuition
• Unlimited tea, coffee, water, and snacks

About your tutor

Rhona Duffy is a picassiette mosaic artist who uses broken pieces of pottery, glass, bone china, and ceramics, often incorporating recycled items in her work. She has a contemporary take on mosaic, while also appreciating the classical rules – she particularly enjoys pushing the boundaries of the Roman technique opus sectile (using larger pieces of material to produce a pattern). Her work is inspired by art nouveau, picassiette, music and nature. Rhona’s work is an antidote to the challenges facing us in today’s world, which aims to bring peace and joy to both herself, as she creates, and its viewers. She has an arts degree in English and philosophy, and a master’s degree in journalism. She launched the international magazine Mosaic & Glass in 2022. In addition, she volunteers at her son’s school, introducing him and his classmates to mosaic and glass. Rhona has taught regularly at the Wider Access to School Project in Denny – a charity providing subsidised higher education to adult learners in the local community – and the Central Scotland School of Craft in Dunblane for several years. She now teaches mainly at Studio 164 Falkirk. Her work is available to buy at Made in Stirling. Originally from Dublin, Rhona has lived in Scotland for over 30 years. Check out some of her work below.
